Christmas arrived in the scratch-off aisle during the first full week of October. Between October 5 and October 11, at least a dozen states Tirage covers pushed winter- and holiday-themed instant tickets into retail, most on a single day — Monday, October 6. Last week's edition caught the leading edge of this reset in Arizona and Michigan; this week it became the whole story. Underneath the tinsel: North Carolina quietly launched the week's largest new top prize, and Massachusetts broke a two-month silence.

New games & launches

North Carolina takes the premium crown

The week's biggest new top prize came out of North Carolina, which released $8 Million Supreme on October 6 — a $50 ticket with an $8,000,000 top prize, now listed among the state's active games on the North Carolina Education Lottery's scratch-off page. It arrived alongside Moneybag Cashword, a $10 ticket with a $1 million top prize (release data) — a notable pivot for a state that spent late September on university-branded $5 tickets.

The same day, Virginia put its own $50 headliner on shelves. PREMIER PLAY, with a $3 million top prize, reached retail October 6 along with $500,000 Disco Dollars ($10), BANK BUSTER ($5, $100,000) and HAUNTED HUNDREDS ($2) — the wave we flagged as queued last week, now confirmed live (release data). Two $50 launches in one day, in neighbouring states, is the clearest sign yet that lotteries expect holiday money at the premium price point.

The holiday wave, state by state

The volume was in the $1-to-$20 seasonal tiers, and the synchronisation was striking:

  • Illinois — October 6, five rungs: Snowfall Mega Multiplier ($20), Treemendous Cash ($10), Winter Winnings ($5), Reindeer Riches ($2), Holiday Ca$h ($1). Trackers put the Snowfall top prize at $600,000 and Treemendous Cash at $500,000 (release data); with no official announcement posted, treat those figures as provisional.
  • Iowa — October 6, also five: Merry Money ($20, $250,000), Holiday Cash ($10, $100,000), Holiday LUCK X20 ($5, $50,000), Crossword Gold ($3), Doughman Doubler ($2) (release data).
  • Indiana — October 6: HIGH ROLLER ($20, $500,000), DOLLAR SIGNS ($10, $250,000), FROSTY FUN CROSSWORD ($3) and a $5 "$20, $50 or $100" ticket (release data).
  • South Carolina — October 6: a full four-rung Triple Red 777 family at $1, $2, $5 and $10, topping out at $500,000 — a whole price ladder refreshed at once (release data).
  • New York — October 6: two $5 tickets, 13 ($500,000) and LUCKY NUMBERS ($300,000), the state's first new instants since September 21 (release data).
  • Connecticut — October 5: four at once, led by X THE MONEY ($10, $200,000), with TREASURE HUNT ($3), WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER ($2) and TIC TAC MULTIPLIER ($1) (release data).
  • Minnesota and New Mexico — October 6: Minnesota added Crossword Gold ($3), Naughty or Nice ($2) and Gift Tag Series ($1); New Mexico shipped a four-ticket set of Snowman Cash ($5), Happy Pawlidays! ($3), ELF ($2) and Winter Cash ($1) (MN, NM).
  • Wisconsin and Rhode Island — October 9: Wisconsin released NAUGHTY OR NICE CROSSWORD ($3, $30,000), 500 HOLIDAY CASH ($5) and FROSTY 50S ($1); Rhode Island put out a straight ladder of HOLIDAY GOLD ($10), HOLIDAY WISHES ($5), HOLIDAY BUCKS ($2) and HOLIDAY CASH ($1) (WI, RI).
  • Idaho — October 5 released Starry Night ($10, $100,000), and Washington — October 10 added LOTERIA EXTRA! 5TH EDITION ($3, $30,000) (ID, WA).

A day before our window, Kansas put out five holiday tickets on October 4, led by Merry Multiplier 50X ($10, $75,000) (release data).

Massachusetts breaks its silence

The quiet structural story: Massachusetts launched new instants on October 6 for the first time since August 11, ending roughly eight weeks without a new ticket — a gap we flagged last week. The returning trio is seasonal: two Candy Cane Cash Blowout tickets at $5 and $10, plus a $2 Jolly Peng-Win Cashword with a $50,000 top prize (release data, cross-check). The state lottery has not posted its own notice, so these details come from retail tracking.

Ohio, the other state we flagged, did not follow. Its newest scratch-off is still Spectacular Riches from June 29 — about three and a half months, the longest launch gap among the states we cover (release data).

Also confirmed in retail

Texas shipped the batch we previewed two editions ago on October 5: Millionaire ($20, $1 million), The Price is Right™ ($10, $250,000) and Money Multiplier ($5). Mississippi got its licensed Ghostbusters $5 ticket ($100,000) onto shelves October 6 with Six Figures ($20) and Tic Tac Multiplier ($2). And in New Jersey, the Jersey Legend: Jon Bon Jovi $5 ticket went statewide October 5, with a launch event the next day alongside Governor Mikie Sherrill: three designs, a $200,000 top prize, and a GUITAR symbol paying five times the prize shown. Bon Jovi is donating his entire fee to charity (announcement, coverage).

Racks stood still, meanwhile, in Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Maryland, Arizona, Kentucky, Colorado, Oklahoma and Louisiana — all of which went the full week without a new instant.

What our data shows

New tickets are not automatically good tickets. Our quantitative models rank games by expected value per dollar — a relative read on how a game stacks up against others on the rack, not a promise about any single ticket. This week's standouts:

  • Virginia — 50X The Money ($20) holds the top slot for a seventh straight week at roughly $1.95 per dollar, with a $3 million top prize and two still unclaimed. Nothing else is close.
  • Michigan — 500X Money Maker ($50) reads near $1.23 per dollar against a $6 million top prize, with 100X ($20) just behind at about $1.21.
  • Missouri — 100X ($10) comes in around $1.12 per dollar with a $1 million top prize live.
  • Indiana — CASH EXTRAVAGANZA ($50) reads about $1.04 per dollar on a $3 million top prize — worth weighing against Indiana's brand-new HIGH ROLLER, which has no track record yet.
  • Florida — SCORCHING HOT 7s ($10) also sits near $1.04, with a $2 million top prize outstanding on a rack that saw nothing new all week.

The pattern worth drawing out: the strongest reads on our board are all established games with top prizes still in play, not the fresh holiday tickets. A rack reset creates choice, not necessarily value.

Notable winners & claimed prizes

Michigan players took the week's two largest instant-game prizes. On October 5, a 37-year-old Wayne County man claimed $2 million on Big Money Pay Day from a ticket bought at a Detroit Safeway, taking a lump sum of about $1.3 million; the game has paid more than $21 million since its July launch (Michigan Lottery). Two days later a 67-year-old Macomb County woman claimed $1 million on the 50X instant game, taking about $693,000 (Michigan Lottery).

Elsewhere, an Augusta, Georgia player claimed the $1 million top prize on 50X the Money on October 5, taking $809,000 before taxes (WRDW). On October 8 the Texas Lottery announced a Pflugerville resident had claimed $1 million on Ultimate Millions from a ticket sold in northeast Austin; two of that game's four top prizes are now gone (KVUE).

A footnote on Ohio's frozen rack: on October 12, just after our window closed, Ohio players claimed two separate $1 million scratch top prizes — one on the $50 VIP Millions, one on the $20 $1,000,000 Cashword (Fox 8). No new tickets for three months, but the old ones are still paying.

Jackpot watch

Context only — the draw games rolled all week.

  • Powerball went unwon on October 5, 7 and 10, climbing to an estimated $538 million for October 12. The October 10 draw, advertised around $516 million, produced a $1 million Match 5 in California (Oct 10, Oct 7).
  • Mega Millions rolled twice. October 6 paid $2 million to a New Jersey ticket and $3 million to a Florida ticket on multiplied Match 5s; October 9 went unwon at $364 million, next estimated at $385 million (Oct 9).
  • EuroMillions rolled on both October 6 and 9, the UK operator listing the unwon Friday jackpot at about £24.3 million (results).

International

Canada produced the week's biggest number. Lotto Max went unwon on October 9 on a CA$80 million jackpot, with four Maxmillions each paying CA$1 million (Narcity). The roll pushed the October 13 jackpot to CA$85 million, the largest ever available in Canada across all Canadian lottery brands, inside a CA$101 million prize pool with an estimated 16 Maxmillions. Operators say an unwon draw sends it to CA$90 million (CP24, Globe and Mail).

Bottom line

The holiday rack reset is fully under way, arriving earlier and more uniformly than the weather justifies. But our models still point at games that have sat on the shelf for weeks rather than the new seasonal tickets — so the question this month is what to keep buying, not what just arrived.
